The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. offers publishers and licensees a single source for licensing and for the collection and distribution of royalties.
HFA is the premier music industry resource for mechanical licensing and for the licensing of new configurations. HFA actively researches new formats in order to continuously deliver new licensing opportunities to our clients.
For more information on licensing services, visit Mechanical Licensing, Digital Licensing, and Limited Quantity Licensing - Songfile.
To request a mechanical license, click here to obtain a request form and begin the licensing process (to request less than 2500 licenses of either physical product or permanent digital downloads, please visit Songfile). If you are new to HFA, please visit Licensee Registration or Publisher Registration, as applicable, for more information on how to begin using HFA's licensing services.
Licensees with established HFA accounts can also register to use HFA's online licensing system, eMechanical. Click here for more details.
If you have an HFA Licensing Account, you can provide your quarterly reporting and payment of mechanical royalties to us by email, which saves you time and resources. Click here for instructions and a simple Excel template.
In addition to licensing for physical formats, HFA offers licensing for various digital formats including full permanent downloads, limited downloads, on-demand streams, ringtones and more. See Digital Licensing for more information.
For current royalty rate information, please review the Statutory Royalty Rates page. It should be noted that a mechanical license does not include the right to reproduce an already existing sound recording. That is a separate right, a Master User Right, which must be procured from the copyright owner of such sound recording.
The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. is not authorized by its publisher-principals to accept Notices of Intention to Obtain a Compulsory License for Making and Distributing Phonorecords pursuant to Section 115 of the Copyright Act on their behalf. All such Notices must be sent directly to the publisher.
HFA issues mechanical licenses that are valid for products manufactured and distributed in the USA (including its territories and possessions) only. If you wish to import recordings manufactured outside of the U.S. into the country, you will need to obtain an import license.
